There are a number of common standards and types of horsepower. Two common definitions used today are mechanical horsepower or imperial horsepower , which is approximately James Watt, a Steam engine pioneer, wanted to measure the performance of his engines against the horse that had previously operated.

One source cites horsepower as the output of a mechanical or electrical system, while the brake horsepower is the output of only the engine the exact opposite of what we state above.
