But Moore also saw in their relationship a way to talk about how difficult it is to preserve human rights in times of trial. The series told sci-fi stories that mirrored debates Americans had at the time regarding torture and other human rights abuses during the George W. Bush administration. The Cylons were an enemy that posed an existential threat to humans, but rather than the obviously robotic robots of the original series, they had evolved into humanlike androids who could live among us and carry out acts of war.
Unless they were? Battlestar explored the fuzzy line between humans and Cylons with greater boldness as it went on, in ways that sometimes frustrated fans but that I ate up. It turns out I have a robust appetite for mystical hoo-ha in my science fiction stories.
And beyond all of these sociopolitical themes, the show was gloriously silly sci-fi. Some fans would tell you the end of this story was disappointing. Battlestar Galactica is one of my favorite TV shows ever made, one of those series I could conceivably write thousands of words about without breaking a sweat. Or Katee Sackhoff as Starbuck. All four seasons of Battlestar Galactica , as well as the miniseries and two spinoff movies, are now streaming on Syfy.

Watch options. Storyline Edit. The second war against the Cylons is over, and The Twelve Colonies have been destroyed. Now Commander Adama of the Battlestar Galatica and President Laura Roslin lead a ragtag fleet of refugees in a supposed search for the fabled lost thirteenth colony, Earth. However, the dangers they face are many, which compound an already difficult situation.
In addition to the Cylons hunting and attacking the fleet in space and their infiltrator units carrying out sabotage--even as their former unwitting pawn, Gaius Baltar, helps in the hunt for them while hiding both his own guilt and the strange presence that haunts his every thought--the fleet also faces internal political conflict in which the rabble-rousing figure Tom Zarek is merely the loudest dissenting voice, not to mention recurring shortages of food, water, and even oxygen.
In the midst of these trials, however, clues begin to appear to suggest that Adama's bluff about finding Earth might hold more truth than anyone could have guessed. The fight to save humanity rages on. Action Adventure Drama Sci-Fi. Did you know Edit. Trivia The phrase "so say we all", which is used as a ceremonial affirmation in the series, was ad-libbed by Edward James Olmos in a speech given by Commander Adama in the mini-series.

Connections Edited into Hollywood Burn User reviews Review. Top review. Wow, now reviews in 9 years I've just finished Season one on Amazon Prime and I must say this is the best sci-fi show I've seen in years. I cannot wait to watch the remaining shows.
Better by far than the original Star Trek series or movies It's even a little sexy, something you rarely see in SciFi. I'm loving it!!!! FAQ 7. Is it "frak", "frakk", "frack", or "fraak"? And then there was the move that arguably broke the narrative: The season 3 finale was originally going to focus solely on Baltar's trial. But the trial didn't feel like enough, Moore has said. The story felt like it needed something else. So the decision was made to make five longtime human characters secret Cylons. And we leave one for next season. But entirely reworking well-established characters halfway through a show isn't the same as doing a story twist or a time jump.
Every previous scene with the newly revealed Cylons was scripted, performed and shot with the intention they were on Team Human, so it felt less shocking than incongruent with the first half of the show. For one character in particular, Saul Tigh, perhaps the show's best example of broken humanity, the retcon felt utterly wrong. In the case of another, Aaron Douglas' Tyrol, the move created plot holes.
It was a bold decision by a drama whose success had been partly due to its bold decisions, but this time it felt more like a wrecking ball. Here's the reveal of four of the five. As Tory Rekha Sharma put it, "Please tell me this isn't happening. Season 4 struggled for coherence as the show attempted to make the Final Five Cylon reveal part of a logical and compelling story.
Yet the show slipped from what was once a grounded-feeling narrative into one that relied on religious mysticism — not necessarily because such fantasy made the show better, but because it was the only way to explain its irrevocable plot moves.
All that said, the much-derided three-part finale, "Daybreak," has some excellent moments, particularly on an emotional level. Baltar's final line, "You know, I know about farming," is a wonderful example of an understated line carrying so much meaning. In some ways, BSG was the victim of a TV model that still thought successful shows should have as many episodes as possible per season in order to maximize ad revenue.
The first BSG season was only 13 episodes, and the result was perfect. The second and third seasons were 20 episodes each, and the fourth was 21 episodes — way too many per season for this kind of story. If BSG were launched today, executives would keep the show's commitment lower to keep the story train from running off the tracks.
That the show managed to maintain its quality so deep into its run is rather astonishing, and there still hasn't been a space drama launched since including The Expanse that's managed to surpass BSG The best way to watch Battlestar Galactica is to stop halfway through.
