What is mayweather weight class

Mayweather next competed against light middleweight titleholder Oscar De la Hoya. Mayweather won the fight by a split decision in 12 rounds, capturing the WBC title. Following the fight, Mayweather retired from boxing. He came back in the Ring not long after for a fight against light welterweight champion Ricky Hatton.

The fight that took place on December 8, was the biggest welterweight showdown between two undefeated fighters. Controlling the fight right from the start, he knocked down Hatton to retain the welterweight championship title. Finally, Mayweather announced his retirement from boxing. Mayweather came out of his retirement 21 months later to fight Juan Manuel Marquez.

The match was a lopsided affair, with Mayweather winning it convincingly. Mayweather returned to light middleweight championship against Miguel Cotto winning the match comfortably.

He then defended his title at welterweight in a match against Robert Guerrero. His next opponent in the ring was Marcos Maidana. A rematch of the fight also resulted in his favour.

The match held on September 12 was a scintillating display of Mayweather brisk and quick moves. His sharp counters and aggressiveness took the match away from Berto. Following his victory, he announced his retirement. The WBC declared his welterweight and super welterweight titles vacant in November Boxing Wiki Explore. Wiki Content. Sullivan Floyd Mayweather, Jr. That would hold my attention a lot more than his next fight with middleweight Sergei Dzinziruk. Martinez is one of the best young junior bantamweights around.

I got to watch him regularly back when he was coming up through the golden gloves. I could easily see him moving up to featherweight, but that would be the limit. Martinez pictured, right has always been an exceptionally fast boxer, and I think he would lose some of his speed if he got any heavier. He's won titles at featherweight, super featherweight and lightweight. I think the great Mexican champion could move up to pounds and still challenge for a title.

Bradley had a less than stellar win over Devon Alexander over the weekend. It appears a rematch could follow, but Bradley pictured, right would be a tremendous opponent for Manny Pacquiao. Berto could go up to junior middleweight, and still have the same power. Anyone else love the possibility of a fight between him and Miguel Cotto?

Mayweather calls himself the best ever, but he must have forgotten about Sugar Ray Robinson as well as more than 40 other boxers better than himself. Ray Robinson dominated from to If not for a heat stroke, Robinson would have been champion after easily outpointing Joey Maxim at This is also ignoring the fact that Ray Robinson fought 12 times a year in his prime against some of the greatest welterweights and middleweights of all time.

Think about how far Mayweather is behind Ray Robinson. Mayweather would have to have beaten the likes of Gamboa, Crawford, and Garcia, move up to defeat Pacquaio and Bradley at , beat Golovkin and Sergio Martinez at , and then defeat Bernard Hopkins and Andrew Ward around to even be remotely considered in the conversation.

Another great weight climber is the under appreciated Sam Langford. Sam Langford fought from lightweight to heavyweight, and due to color barriers he would never be given a title shot, despite beating the likes of Harry Wills, Joe Gans, Tiger Flowers, and Sam McVey. While Floyd Mayweather was unwilling to fight Sergio Martinez or Paul Williams in their primes at , at a class Mayweather has fought multiple times no less, Langford decided to take on a top 10 all time heavyweight in Jack Johnson, despite being a former lightweight.

There may be some claiming that Langford is overrated due to his time period, but Jack Dempsey would say otherwise, openly admitting he would refuse to fight Langford due to how dangerous he was. Joe Louis also stated that he wished to one day be as good as Sam Langford, so Langford is clearly not a Mayweather-like figure being born at the right place at the right time in a weak era. Just one example, Tiger Flowers, famous for fighting the great Harry Greb almost universally considered a top 10 all time pound for pound fighter to three controversial decisions, was fighting against Sam Langford at a time when Langford was medically blind.

Langford fought for 26 years and ended his career at the age of 43 with fights. By comparison, year old Mayweather took a nearly two-year vacation, and has a mere 46 fights in 18 years. This is all without anywhere near as much of a size disadvantage as Sam Langford.

I highly doubt Mayweather would be at the top of his game anymore if he fought against the likes of Jack Johnson or Harry Wills, especially if he had to fight once every couple of weeks like Langford did. When the truth is examined and put in context, it is easy to no longer be misled.
