However, the Gravemind survived High Charity's destruction and began to rebuild itself on the ring while the Flood invaded , attempting to stop the new ring from being fired. Cortana was able to use the Index from Installation 04 to fire Installation 08 which killed most of the Flood forms on the Ark along with the Gravemind.
