They talk over his vengeance, and while the conversation is different depending on the level of friendship or rivalry, Fenris asks for forgiveness. Fenris laments ending their relationship and would like to pick up where they left off if Hawke can forgive him. Forgiving him locks the romance into place for the remainder of the game, and they seal it with a kiss. There is an option to receive the romance achievement before the final battle with a conversation.
Afterwards, it is implied that Hawke and Fenris flee Kirkwall together and go into hiding. If players transfer data from a save in which Hawke romanced Fenris to Inquisition , there will be dialogue options about where Fenris is when Hawke arrives at Skyhold. This suggests their relationship carried on well after Kirkwall and remains strong.
The Inquisitor possibly leaving Hawke behind in the Fade when facing the Nightmare Demon could lead to extreme circumstances in the next game , as Fenris will more than likely tear the heavens asunder to get them back. During Questioning Beliefs , Hawke learns that Fenris has obtained considerable knowledge of Qunari culture and practices; a result of him being left behind on Seheron by his master after a battle between the Tevinter mages and the Qunari.
His injuries were treated by Fog Warriors and he spent several months living with them before Danarius returned to retrieve Fenris. The Fog Warriors refused to give him up, and Danarius was injured in the subsequent battle. Danarius ordered Fenris to kill the Fog Warriors who had defended him, which he did. He indicates regret at doing so, but apparently still had a lingering propensity to do as commanded upon the return of his master.
It was this event that caused Fenris to finally leave his master, taking advantage of the delay in pursuit that Danarius' injuries offered. If brought to meetings with the Arishok, Fenris has special dialogue that demonstrates his knowledge, which, in turn, impresses the Arishok. However, he also states that he is not a follower of the Qun. Fenris can also arrange a duel between the Arishok and Hawke if brought along.
During his personal quest Alone , Fenris tells Hawke that he has obtained information about his sister and wants Hawke to go with him to meet her. After Varania talks about events in Fenris' past, Danarius appears, revealing that it was a set-up. He promised to make Variana his apprentice in exchange for baiting Fenris.
Hawke has two options: to turn Fenris in or to engage in combat with Danarius. If Hawke agrees to betray Fenris, he gives up without a fight and permanently leaves the party.
Later, Hawke receives a letter from Danarius stating that Fenris "is his usual compliant self now that his memories have been once again removed. Hawke can let him do it or persuade him not to kill her. If Varania lives, she reveals that Fenris competed to obtain his lyrium markings and used a boon in order to free her and their mother from slavery. She says that freedom was no boon and that he has no idea what she's had to do since their mother died, then leaves.
One of the dialogue options leads to him permanently leaving the party. After the destruction of the Chantry, Fenris advocates for killing Anders. In the final battle , Fenris always joins Hawke who sided with the templars.
Varric states that he's been killing Tevinter slavers preying on refugees. Romanced Fenris: Later, upon asking Hawke why they are alone, they state that Fenris would have died to protect them, and they didn't want to give him that chance. Four years later, Fenris is being tracked by Francesca Invidus , whose Magister father he has abducted from Fort Viridan. Francesca is accompanied by Vaea and Autumn the mabari. Vaea asks that she be the one to do the talking with Fenris, as they have a mutual friend.
As the women stumble upon the corpse of a man with a gaping hole in its chest, Fenris appears, telling them it was a mistake to come. Francesca angrily asks about her father, accompanying her words with a spell that knocks Vaea off her feet but harmlessly passes through Fenris. Fenris refuses Vaea's offer of help, saying that he no longer has partners or teammates. When Vaea remarks that he was close to his team in Kirkwall, Fenris replies that they all went their separate ways in the end, and that people only use you for as long as they need your power, as it is apparently easier for him to be angry than miss his former companions.
The slave reveals that the magister has gone to retrieve a sarcophagus that infuses elves with lyrium. Hearing this, Fenris angrily exclaims that the sarcophagus was broken beyond repair, and attacks the Qunari. Fenris and Francesca kill most of them, though the Viddasala escapes. Fenris lashes out when Vaea touches his shoulder to reassure him, as the markings occasionally cause pain. He quickly apologizes. Fenris frees Nenealeus' surviving slaves.
He tells them that he'd be eternally grateful if they shared what they knew of his whereabouts, and a young boy volunteers the information. Fenris gladly accepts Autumn's offer of help and tells Vaea and Francesca that they can join too if they wish.
They arrive just in time to help Ser Aaron's group in their fight against more Qunari and unstable test subjects. Fenris and Francesca chase after the caravan to rescue her father and confront Shirallas.
When Fenris tries to question him, he says that he's close to possessing the power he originally sought and unleashes one of the test subjects, allowing the caravan to escape. While Tessa scouts around Neromenian for information on how to infiltrate Castellum Tenebris , the rest of Ser Aaron 's group waits in a tavern. Fenris notes that Ser Aaron has the look of a man haunted by failure, the same look that Hawke had after the death of their mother. When Tessa reports that she has found Tractus Danarius getting drunk in another tavern, Fenris is initially disbelieving, as he thought he'd killed all of Danarius' heirs, then angry.
He says that he'll kill Tractus and end Danarius' line once and for all. However, Vaea convinces him that they need Tractus alive to tell them of a way inside his fortress. While the rest of the group acts as lookouts, Fenris, Vaea, and Autumn confront Tractus in his room at the tavern. A fight immediately breaks out, as Tractus recognizes Fenris as his father's killer, but Fenris is able to overpower him.
Using the abilities that Danarius' ritual gave him, Fenris tortures Tractus into revealing the location of the secret passage into Tenebris.
However, Tractus says that it can only be opened from the inside and that they'll never be able to get past the bridge. He also reveals that Magister Nenealeus will perform the ritual on Shirallas that same night. Having obtained the information he was looking for, Fenris moves to kill Tractus, but is once again stopped by Vaea, who argues that they don't have the time, as the Qunari have just invaded the city, and that Tractus was only a child when Fenris was last with Danarius.
This is especially true with Hawke. In times of both joy and anger, Fenris often looks away. There is a little development depending on the player by Act 3 where he is better at maintaining eye-contact. Speaking of eye-contact, there are very subtle differences in the rival and friendship romances. One is during the first kiss scene. Fenris is leaving in anger, and Hawke grabs him.
This makes Fenris turn around and pin Hawke to the wall. If rivaled, Fenris is looking down. If friended, he looks at Hawke's face. Unbelievable, right? Sebastian and Fenris are characters that get along in Hawke's merry band of misfits.
However, they do disagree one one thing: turning Merrill and Anders over to the Templars. In a banter, Sebastian suggests it and Fenris disagrees. He if Hawke doesn't agree, then he doesn't agree either.
